How to find your average crypto price

If you buy a coin more than once, every purchase has a different price. Your average buy price (also called average entry or cost basis per coin) tells you what one coin really cost you overall. It is the number you need to know whether you are in profit, and where your break-even is.

You can enter each buy in two ways:

The formula

Your average price is a weighted average: bigger buys count more.

Coins per buy = Amount spent ÷ Price Average price = Total amount spent ÷ Total coins Profit / loss = Total coins × Current price − Total spent

Worked example

You bought Bitcoin three times:

BuyPriceSpentBTC received
1$68,000$5000.00735
2$58,000$5000.00862
3$52,000$1,0000.01923

Total spent: $2,000. Total BTC: 0.03520. Average price: $2,000 ÷ 0.03520 = about $56,800.

A simple average of the three prices would be $59,333. That is wrong, because it ignores that you bought twice as much at $52,000.

Why your average price matters

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my average crypto buy price?

Add up everything you spent and divide it by the total number of coins you received. This is a weighted average, so bigger buys count more.

Why isn't it just the average of my buy prices?

A simple average treats every buy as equal. The real average is weighted by how much you bought each time. If you spent $1,000 at one price and $100 at another, the $1,000 buy has ten times more effect.

Does selling change my average price?

With the average-cost method, selling reduces the number of coins you hold but does not change the average price of the coins you keep. Only buying moves the average. Some tax systems use other methods (like FIFO), so tax numbers can differ.

Should I include fees?

Yes. Enter the total you actually paid, including the fee. That gives you your true cost basis.

Can I calculate more than one coin?

Yes. Click "Add another coin" and enter the buys for each coin separately. Each coin gets its own average price, because averaging Bitcoin and Solana prices together would not mean anything. If you add a current price for every coin, you also get your total profit or loss.

Can I use it for stocks?

Yes. The math is the same for shares, ETFs or any asset you buy in several parts. Just read "coins" as "shares".
